SentLetters

In my pursuit to get the massive user base of wikipedia to help me with finding out more information about the Drexler Coal Company, I have started to create links to the Drexler Coal Article.  The article does not exist currently, because apparently you have to have links coming in and prove that it is necessary to have in the site.  So, I have started my rebellion by creating this page: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/US_Coal_Companies.  It links to the Drexler Coal Company.  Eventually I will go in and recreate the article and attempt to get it to stay on wikipedia.

It would be nice to at least have the possibility that someone who knows about the company could add information.  I would then be able to figure out more about the Drexler family, which is what I am after in the long run anyways.

If I haven’t said it yet, I appreciate you who read this blog.  Any one who is interested in having a letter of their own featured on the site, please contact me by commenting on this post.  I would be happy to post scans and descriptions, or full text transcriptions (with pictures of course!) of your old letters.

Note: I posted this to wikipedia, and I even commented and followed their rules to instantiate importance. They deleted the thing anyway. If you get a chance, please go and put the article back up.

 In my research about the previous letter, I did a quick google search and a quick wikipedia search for the Drexler Coal Company. Neither of which turned up anything of any consequence. So I posted a new wikipedia article for Drexler Coal.

If you have any information about this company please make sure to add it to the wikipedia article. As soon as I created the one linked to above, the bots that manage the site attempted to have it auto-deleted because they thought it was an effort at spamming wikipedia.

Now that I have over 200 letters sitting queued up in my office, and another 300 or so on their way here, I am going to change the format of my posts.

I will be posting letters by putting a full or close to full size picture in the post, and then commenting on the letter, or posting a quote from the letter. This will allow me to feel a lot less overwhelmed about this project, and post more letters more frequently.

I will type the letters that I really like or if you as a reader want me to type the letter up, I will do that. Also, if there is anyone out there that is interested in helping with the project by typing the letter from the scan it would be appreciated by myself and the readers of the Sent Letters project.

I also am going to start categorizing the letters based on the family name of the person sending or receiving the letters.  I believe that this will give a greater chance that the letters will attract the family members of the original writer/recipient of the letters.

It took me a while, between multiple moves, finishing school, and starting a new job I just didnt have the time or the stamina to keep the site updated.  I sincerely apologize about that, but I was doing alot of extra stuff and something had to take a break. I think that I will be able to balance this blog and my other project a little better now, so to get started I will be updating the site weekly.  Usually I will try to get one letter up a week maybe more.

The other thing that kept me from updating the blog was simply having letters.  What!? You mean I have to have letters to post on here?  Yeah, for sure.  So, I found some letters.  The letters that I am going to be posting will be from the Drexler family and friends.  They are to a girl who was in college during the years of 1930 - 1940.

Well, as a result of typing the first couple of letters, I have become very interested in the people mentioned. I have learned alot about them, and have done a little research on them as well.

So…I added a whole new feature to the site. It is called The SentLetters Wiki. It is a wiki for all of the people who show up in the letters.

The idea is to facilitate the research and recording of the information that is discovered about the people in the letters that I post. I will continue to do searches and try to contact as many people as possible to add to the information on the site.
