Norma talks about the oil shortage and how they have to keep their home extremely cold, sometimes rooms get as low as 20 degrees. Man that is frigid!

She talks about a movie short, and this month’s issue of Life as if they are talking about something very important. Ideas?

I really like the “For Victory Buy War Bonds” stamps at the bottom of every page. Does anyone know what the “Office of Price Administration” is?

Sometimes this project is frustrating and exciting, but especially frustrating right now as I am posting these letters from an unknown time. I am posting them out of order from the rest of the letters. So I am getting a sneak peak of what is to come, but it makes absolutely no sense to me yet. Its like someone continuing a conversation from the middle that they started with someone else 70 years ago! I wish I knew more about what is going on here. Only time will help me find out.This project creates little historical mysteries for me, that inevitable leave me scouring the internet for clues. As I get into the meat of this collection of letters, I hope to find more clues as to the time in which these letters belong, so I can get more information about what they are talking about in the letters!

This audio player will play a radio broadcast from WNYC. They are “talking about stumbling upon the past in unlikely places”.

They start out on top of a landfill in New York, discussing the history that is contained inside.Then they talk about a place in Egypt, where two Oxford Archaeologists in the late 1800’s found some sand dunes that looked irregular compared to the other ones in the area. They found the “mother load … of rubbish heaps”, that are as old as 10 centuries old. They found thousands of pieces of papers in the trash heaps. The most amazing part of this, is that historians are still piecing the papers back together. In one century, they have pieced together 1% of the pieces.The audio is from WYNC Detective Stories.

Side Note: Wouldn’t it be amazing if I had letters like that to post on this site!!

This letter came with a box of other letters related to the Drexlers and The Drexler Coal Company.   As you can see it does not have a date on it.

So Ben went to two top of the line clinics and five separate doctors to diagnose a case of ringworm.  Ringoworm must have been a big deal or somewhat unheard of in the 1930’s because it is very common nowadays.

Also amazing is that Ben met a girl named “Blue Green”.

The book he discusses is possibly “Earth, My Friend” By Peter Townsend.  If this is in fact the book he is referring to, then the letter had to have been written after or during 1959 and not in the 30’s like the rest of the letters that I got with this one.

I sure was surprised as hell to receive that wonderful package from you two today. Every thing in it was just swell and sure hit the spot. I really can’t find words to express my thanks to both of you and Johnnie.

I know I have no written you in a long, long time. But you will have to excuse me because, sometimes I have a slip of memory and forget your address.

Did you have a nice Christmas? You two did not get drunk did you? Or isn’t it like when I used to be home. Drink, shoot crap and lose all my money?

Tom I can’t think of anything else at the present time. I am feeling fine, hope that you and Mary and Johnnie are the same. So I’ll close this letter with a load of thanks for the package. Hope that by next Christmas I shall be home to enjoy it with you and the rest of the family. What a reunion.

Dear Tom:

I had no idea I owed you a letter, Sorry. Yes, I want stuff: Film, candy. Food will spoil. Frank’s package came today with mouldy fudge. My mouth sure drooled. I can’t send my exposed film home, as you’ll have to wait until the war is over, which shouldn’t be very long now. I think I’ll have a French souvenir for the family if things turn out. From now on I’m on the market for a German camera. I’ve been trying for a Luger pistol, but I’d rather have a camera. I don’t have much time to buy stuff, since we move so often you can see. Jerry is on the run &we want to keep it so. Send some info about type of camera and I’ll try. I’m in Harry Gardi’s section now and I get to see alot of him. I have a Detrola miniature camera for #127 film. Got it in a carp game. Maybe I’ll have some luck in Belgium. Lots more letters to write. Love to you all.

My first try at Vmail. How glad we all were when Arlene told me she had your first letter. Just the day before it arrives she spent with me. How glad I am that she came, it gave me a chancve to know here. She is fine and doing a great job of taking care of herself. Of course she misses you a lot.

so do we all.

Kay is getting a new hunting dog this week so he is all excited about it. He even has me reading books on hot to train hunting dogs. This one is an English setter_ black & white _ Karlton wants to name it “Jeenie”-so I guess “Jeenie” it will be. We are now enjoying the summer, which was so long in comming.

Karlton is staying at Thelma’s for a week, so you see it miss him too. Your letter came to day.

Mary dear -

No mail from anybody at home yet. Hope you have received my address by this time and that something ill be coming along tomorrow.

I have been “bending my elbow” this afternoon. After class my roomieand I walked over to Harvard Sq., about 1/2 mi. We have to wear our garrison caps, the kind you like, when off the post. This area is alive with Navy and Army men - so I am bending my elbow most of my way up and down the street acknowledging salutes.

There is about the same number of Naval men over at Harvard Sq. as here, approximately 1000.
the Army’s Chaplin School is over there too. If I get a chance I will try and locate ???. Donald Sunday. he will be leaving here soon as their’s is a 30 day Cou?? too.

Hope to get into Boston tomorrow P.M. and get some shoes. Also see a movie, anything to get a change.
Some snow fall her elast nite, about 14 inches. Hope you escaped this one. Going to be cold tonite - clear and about 15 above now.

Wish I could think of something to say. I a m looking for a letter and thinking of you all the time. I don’t have much time to pray now - so you will have to do most of it.
